I once worked with a client who had a very strong artistic side but also struggled with perfectionism. We agreed that she would pursue a challenge of taking photographs of imperfect beauty. It was the hardest and most rewarding thing for her. At first all she saw was some thing that was almost beautiful, marred only by the imperfection. And then one day she saw a streetscape scene of beautiful old San Francisco architecture, hills, trolley tracks and … power lines. In the moment she was able to shift her perspective from the lines marring the beauty to making the beauty. She saw that she couldn’t imagine the city that she loved without the power lines, that without the power lines her city wouldn’t be possible and therefore they had to be a part of the beauty. And this opened the possibility that the same phenomenon existed inwardly.
